St. Augustine’s Confessions is a work that changes lives. Augustine’s searingly honest account of his conversion reveals the journey to God that most of us experience: a deep desire for God compromised repeatedly by our own uncertainties and fear of total commitment. The result is the paradox at the center of our lives: we know that God alone can bring ultimate happiness and yet we try a thousand ways to find happiness elsewhere. Augustine invents the autobiography and immediately transcends it: we read not just his own shortcomings but discover a coherent account of this paradox of human experience in its simplest, terrible, terms -- sin is ultimately our attempt not to rely upon our Creator, but to create our happiness as if we were the Creator. The result inevitably substitutes the nothingness of our own self-deceptions for the joy of God. In six lectures we will read through Confessions with particular attention to clarifying the complicated historical and intellectual context of Augustine’s world that will explain his thought and highlight the significance of his story to our own lived experience.
